In our class we have many opinionated people, which makes for many very interesting discussions. I just like to sit back and listen to everyone’s opinions on things. When I sit there and listen I am sure to keep an open mind, because someone always seems to make a point in a way that I have never thought about that topic, whether I agree with it or not. I have my opinions on some things and when that topic arises I will speak on it, but when we discuss things I am not real knowledgable in I let other people that are talk. I love that our class can talk about things from all angles. I know for me, I feel that I learn something new whether it is a random topic or one from the readings.
On Wednesday, the topic of homosexuality came up. We have people all over the spectrum on how they feel about this. I personally think that makes for a better discussion, but that may just be me. I used to think I was pretty set in what I thought, but listening to everyone tell their opinions i began to see things from other points of view. I began to think if I ever had a family member tell me they were gay I wouldn’t love them any less, and I surely wouldn’t want other people to treat them differently because of it. When people voice their opinion I may feel that they are retarded for thinking that, but then again I have to take into consideration how they were brought up and what enviroment they live in. That has a huge effect on people’s perspectives.
I’m not saying that everyone is going to take things the way I do or that I will always change my opinion, but I can honestly say that I will start to take everything into account when forming an opinion on a topic. We have only been in class for 2 weeks and I feel that I have learned many new things and reconsidered the judgements that I have made about people. I am hoping to learn much more from all my classmates and our teacher through our in class discussions.
